Filmed at John's first major solo exhibition, "You Are Here (To Yoko From John Lennon, With Love)," at the Robert Fraser Gallery in London in 1968, this video, directed by John Lennon and shot by William The original Lennon Film Archives video, directed by John Lennon and filmed by William Wearing and Dick Lorimore, has now been beautifully restored.
The film shows John, then 27 years old, making final preparations for his solo exhibition with Robert Fraser and his team on June 30, 1968, and the glamorous opening ceremony the following day on July 1. At the time, John was in the midst of writing and recording the "White Album," as The Beatles were known.
The exhibition was very minimalist, with a charity collection box and a white canvas with "You Are Here" written on it in John's handwriting. Next to the artwork was a fundraising hat for the "artist" and a large jar filled with small white badges with the message "You Are Here," which visitors could take home.
After my first meeting with Yoko, she encouraged me to make films, make music further afield, have gallery exhibitions, and present more of the art I was doing privately. Whatever I was doing, she encouraged me to do. Soon after we met, I had a gallery show at the Robert Fraser Gallery in London. I showed a piece there called "You Are Here. It was a bolt out of the blue. I had never done anything like that before."
