(C) Carnivalesque Films 2023

Kim's Video, a well-known rental store in New York City, became popular for its collection of 55,000 rare movies, but closed its doors in 2008. The owner transferred the collection to Sicily on the condition of continued member use, but years later they were abandoned in a damp warehouse. David, a former member and director, decides to rescue them, chases the police, the mayor, and the mafia, and summons the "genie" of cinema to retrieve them on a carnival night under the guise of a film shoot.

A gripping documentary about the love and madness surrounding the 55,000-piece collection left behind by the legendary Kim's Video rental store in New York City. Suzume, an ordinary housewife whose husband is on overseas assignment, spends her monotonous days with only her pet turtle to talk to. One day, she sees a poster that says "Spy Wanted" and applies for the job, hoping to escape from her mundane life. At the interview, she is praised for her "ordinaryness" and is hired, but her mission is to "live quietly and inconspicuously. She soon begins to look behind the scenes of everyday life and encounters strange people and events. Gradually, she begins to stand out from the crowd.

Director Satoshi Miki returns to the screen after 20 years with a digitally remastered version of his 2005 "offbeat" comedy! Ueno Juri gives a humorous and sensitive performance as Suzume, an ordinary housewife who suddenly gets caught up in a mysterious daily life. Aoi Yu, Iwamatsu Ryo, Fuse Eri, Kaname Jun and other talented actors co-star. The film's loose tempo and offbeat humor, such as the humorous exchanges between "Azuki Panda-chan," slowly unfolds, and the dialogue and scenes that sometimes pry into the mind of the viewer lead them into a slightly philosophical reverberation. The theme song, "Minamikaze" by Remioromen, lightly enhances the worldview and leaves a warm impression in the viewer's mind after the film is over.

Director: Nobuhiro Yamashita

Cast: Bae Doona, Aki Maeda, Yu Kashii, Shiori Sekine (Base Ball Bear), Kyoyoyo Mimura, Shione Yukawa, Yuko Yamazaki (New Moon Touka/RABIRABI), Masahiro Komoto, Kenichi Matsuyama, Katsuya Kobayashi, etc.

(c) "Linda Linda Linda" Partners

Shibasaki High School in a provincial city. On the day before the school festival, Megumi, Kyoko, and Nozomu's band is on the verge of collapse due to a broken guitar and the withdrawal of the vocalist. Then they hear the song "Linda, Linda, Linda" by the Blue Hearts and are inspired that even the three of them can perform. The four practice hard in preparation for the school festival.

Director Nobuhiro Yamashita's 2005 coming-of-age film returns to the screen for the first time in 20 years in a 4K remastered version! A group of high school girls gather for a cultural festival and take on the Blue Hearts' "Linda, Linda, Linda" with Korean exchange student Song, played by Bae Doo-na, as the vocalist. The richly individualistic performances of Aki Maeda, Yu Kashii, and Fumiori Sekine and the music of James Iha resonate with each other, enveloping the audience in a fresh time. The straight and clumsy energy and the brilliance of fragility do not fade away no matter how many times you see this film, and each time it gives you a fresh uplift. This is a special film that everyone can relate to their own youth and feel their hearts warm with excitement.

Reiko, who works at a real estate agency in Kowloon Fortress, is in love with Kudo, her senior, but is unable to close the distance between them. However, one day, she is mistaken for Kudo's girlfriend and discovers a photo of a woman who looks exactly like her. The lost memory, the other self, and the mystery hidden in the city of Kowloon are unraveled with love, shaking the past and the present.

Based on Jun Bizuki's novel and directed by Chihiro Ikeda, this is a mystery love romance with a sense of humidity set in Kowloon Fortress. Riho Yoshioka delicately portrays the wavering emotions behind Reiko's cool exterior, while Koji Mizukami naturally embodies the strength and fragility of Kudo's character, drawing the viewer in. The moment their performances intersect, a definite tension and a secretive shadow rise up. The past and present intersect, and love and mystery intertwine in a relationship that asks us to question what we believe in and how we perceive ourselves in a work with deep reverberations.

We introduced four recommended films released in August.
Next month, we will continue to bring you inspiring and interesting films. Please look forward to it!
